Brainspotting and Test Anxiety

So many students struggle with test anxiety without it ever being addressed. In our experience, we’ve heard all too often that students are great with homework and in-class work, but really struggle to access that material on the test. Students often times will label themselves as bad-test takers because of this. We truly believe that there are no bad test-takers, just unmet needs.

Test anxiety manifests in many different ways. Here are some very common symptoms/signs:

A student feels like they have forgotten everything they just studied as soon as the test starts.

A student freezes often or feels panicked during test taking (or with the addition of a timing mechanism)

A student makes consistently more mistakes on testing than they do on any homework assignments or in-class work.

In more extreme cases where the test anxiety becomes debilitating, we suggest a student work with our licensed Brainspotting pracititioners or our licensed therapist in order to address these issues. Brainspotting has many practical uses, but has been shown to be very effective at treating generalized anxiety. We’ve used this tool to great success with helping students feel more comfortable in testing or classroom environments.

What is Brainspotting?

Brainspotting is a technique developed by David Grand, Ph.D that allows a person to find locations within a person’s visual field that are associated with certain unprocessed blocks. Once the spot has been located, a practitioner can walk the person through the processing steps in order to break through the block.
